Film Review: Interstellar

Cinematic sci-fi masterpiece! These are the only words that resonate in my mind when I think of this movie. Built on a whopping budget of 165 million dollars, every frame looks aesthetic and dazzling. If you think the price tag of 165 million is too much, then you should know that this Nolan masterpiece has earned 677.4 million which is more than 5x the budget.

I. Story & Screenplay

People claim that sci-fi movies are usually shallow on emotions but the endgame of this movie could be sensed at the very beginning. Throughout the movie, human emotions were the underlying factor behind every move. Looking for earth's replacement, securing a better future for cooper's children, Brand searching for Dr. Wolf, and Murphy's love and the attachment for her father were all underlying emotions that drove the characters to act out. The scene where Matthew McConaughey looks at the video footage of his children over the years is enough to break his and the audience's hearts alike. The story is complex but the emotion and motive behind it are not. By far, one of the most layered sci-fi stories in American cinema.

II. Direction & Music

Probably one of the best aspects of the film was how it was directed. It truly achieved scenic symmetry in almost every scene. The lighting was perfect, the video quality was over the top and even the character interactions were fairly aesthetic. The movie is so visually attractive that watching it would be a treat to your eyes. Sure, the IMAX camera and surround sound helps but the way it was shot looked like the work of someone experienced. Nolan is known for using practical props instead of CGI. Such authenticity makes his movies more organic and 'real' to consume. The music, on the other hand, was obviously amazing because of Hans Zimmer but one thing that felt unnecessary was his use of Dark, resonating Ad-hoc sound effects in almost every situation. This type of sound effect does create suspense and hype you up but when used too much unnecessarily can diminish the suspense-creating ability of the effect.

III. Cast

Nolan is so big of a director now that he can work with anyone he wants to work with. So he ends up working with his famous regulars and even famous new ones. The film boasted an ensemble cast of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Topher Grace, Matt Damon, Timothee Chalamet and, Michael Caine (because no Nolan movie is complete without him popping at least once). Everyone brought their A-game for this movie but the lead of the movie - Matthew McConaughey was the takeaway of this film and one can't blame him because, during that time, Matthew was one of the best actors in the world (he still is).

In conclusion, it is one of those movies that you must watch during your lifetime. If you don't believe us, IMDB has rated this one 29th on their 'top 250 movies of all time' list. So, now would be a good time to grab some snacks, fire up Prime Video and enjoy the almost 3-hour masterpiece.
