I wish I could go back in time and meet Adam Sandler when he is about to start his film career and say, " You are a bloody good actor! just choose the right scripts..." This is how I would like to start this analysis because this has to be Adam Sandler's career-best performance after Punch Drunk Love. Credits to the Safdie Brothers who created such a complex, charming, and at the same time a crestfallen character in their blood pumping crime, comedy film.
Howard Ratner a resident of New York, a Jewish businessman dealing with diamonds and gems. He is the kind of person who has an insane gambling addiction, it's to the level of pumping cocaine into the lungs for a person. His Gamble addiction brings him down deep drench which makes his portrayal a realistic character arc. One thing is clear that his final motive of gambling wasn't just money, it's about making more and being great. The first instance of his feelings of being complete was a scene in the first act when receives the Opal he is entranced not by its beauty, color, or the value it possesses but by its 'uncut' state.
The film is a stressful watch it is because of the path Howard is taking. By the very end, he is has hedged himself in great debt. In the final bit, the way he deals with his creditors shows his manipulative nature. He has a wife in the film but their relation is not seen on good terms. The kind of situation created in the film just seems unlikely for a character like him to end up with happy days but in one way you root for the character. Every time in the film when his character comes to curveball he somehow gets control which was another implication of his character's rise and fall pattern in the entire film.
A story about a man's unquenching thirst to win does eventually leads to dooms rains. His character speaks for every human deem to be the greatest, to find that soft spot in a calculated life. The calm his character seems, in the beginning, is as perfectly pulled off by Sandler as he loses his shit near the very end. After an exhilarating film like Good Time Safdie Brothers have left no stone unturned to show they are the modern-day craftsman of crime drama which was held forward by Adam Sandler's portrayal of Howard Turner.
